Documents

Transcriptions/transliterations, summaries, and/or structured data of archival records written by or about dragomans in Venetian service in the period 1589-1720. The bulk of the current collection includes approximately 2000 records (primarily in Ottoman and Italian) collated by the Venetian bailate chancery in Istanbul and now kept in the Venetian State Archives. Additional records from Istanbul, Zadar, Vienna, London, and elsewhere related to dragomans’ involvement in Venetian-Ottoman diplomacy will be added in the near future.

Dragoman Person Records

Person Records

A bio-bibliographical dataset of hundreds of dragomans and other diplomatic personnel in Venetian service in Istanbul and in Ottoman service in Venice in the period 1550-1780. This evolving dataset allows researchers to trace dragomans' and diplomats’ life trajectories and kinship, financial, and professional ties, as well as their translations and other textual and visual output (in both manuscript and print) in a variety of genres, including wills, portraits, and commissioned works. Partially based on an index prepared by the late Prof. Maria Pia Pedani.
